5 Things Saving my Mental Health as a Second Time Mom

5 Things Saving my Mental Health as a Second Time Mom

Postpartum mental health can be a real journey. I had a somewhat tough go with Hudson, so I was really nervous that things would be the same or worse with having twins. It might be because I have some experience under my belt or because I’m too busy to even think, but this postpartum season has been a little easier on me.

I got thinking more about it, and noticed there are a few things that have become part of my daily routine that I think are really helping my mental health as a second time mom as well. They’re simple things, but have been really helping me feel better these last nine weeks:

Doing 2 Daily Resets

Before lunch and before dinner I like to just give the house a quick tidy and reset. I have Hudson clean up his toys and I tidy up the kitchen or do any little chores I can accomplish quickly. We typically have some quiet time for 30-60 minutes after lunch if not a full blown nap, and after dinner we try to play outside or do a bath so those things help preserve how long my house feels in order which is really helpful for me. Being in a clean space helps me feel better, so this has probably been the most impactful thing I have added to our daily routine.

5 Minute Makeup Routine

I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis anymore, and I very rarely prioritize a full face of makeup these days. However, a little bit of makeup can help me feel put together and more like myself. I have my routine down to five minutes or less, which is ideal for these busy mornings. I hope to share my routine with you soon!

Letting Go of Perfectionism

Perfectionism is something I have struggled with in the past, and still sort of do. My perfectionism really stifles me and often takes the enjoyment out of what I’m doing. I’m trying to remind myself that it’s okay to make mistakes and not everything needs to be perfect.

Getting Outside

Getting outside is huge for my mental health. It makes such a difference in my mood and is so easy to do. H loves playing in the backyard, so we’re spending a lot of time out there these days! I loved playing outside as a kid, so it’s nice to see H enjoying it too.

Being Present

Being present and staying off my phone as much as possible through the day is another really helpful thing I have recently implemented. If my phone is away, I’m engaging with my children more and H is much better behaved. Social media can be so much fun, but it can sometimes be hard to not compare yourself to others and feel lesser than. It’s unhealthy, and nowhere near as important as my little family.

Whar are some things you prioritize for your mental health?
