It’s hard to believe we’re already survived our first week with our twins! It has gone by so quickly and I’m doing my best to soak up every moment.
For those of you who don’t know, my husband and I have a toddler Hudson and were expecting twins!
Jameson and Violet were born last week and are the perfect additions to our little family. Hudson loves them so much already and watching him be a big brother has been the sweetest. I was so nervous before the twins came that he would have a hard time, but he’s been so good about everything and has blown us away! He loves helping us take care of the babies and giving them hugs. It’s beyond cute!
I have learned so much this past week and am thankful that this isn’t my first rodeo. While twins has been so different compared to when I had Hudson, I feel a lot more confident in my abilities as a mom which has helped tremendously.
Here is a little glimpse into my first week as a twin mom:
Friday
Violet and Jameson were both breech a majority of my pregnancy, so they were born via scheduled c-section last Friday. This was kind of my worst fear come true. It took me weeks to accept that I was going to have to have a c-section. I had such a positive birthing experience with Hudson; so I was disappointed I wasn’t going to get the chance with the twins. I was also really scared as I’ve never had surgery before.
We got to the hospital Friday morning and everything went according to schedule; which was nice at least. The c-section itself was not something I enjoyed. I was really thankful when it was over and we had two healthy babies.
I felt better than expected afterwards and spent the afternoon getting to know the babies and visiting with my parents. I didn’t end up sleeping at all that night, but I didn’t when I had Hudson either. In these cases I think there’s too much excitement and adrenaline that my body just can’t relax!
Saturday
Saturday was a day full of visitors. My mom and sister brought Hudson and my niece to the hospital so everyone could meet the babies. Hudson was so excited about meeting them and wanted to hold them. I was so excited to have my first baby there as being away from him was the hardest part for me; even though he had the best weekend away! My sister and niece got to meet the babies too; which was such a special moment as well.
After they left, the twins had to undergo some usual testing. Then, Cole’s family came to visit. During that time we found out that the twins and I were both recovering so well that we could be discharged later that afternoon, which I was happy about! My pain ended up taking a turn for the worst. But I still decided I wanted to go home and be in my own bed.
My sister came over in the evening to be with me while Cole went out to the pharmacy to get me all of the pain management meds the doctor had recommended.
The first night was tough. I was in more pain than I thought I’d be and the babies were up a lot.
Sunday
Our first official day at home and Cole went out to get us breakfast and iced coffee. My mom and sister came by and brought us a bunch of meals, snacks, and treats, which was so thoughtful and really came in handy through the week. It was so nice to sit and visit with them too!
Later that evening my sister and her family came back with Hudson and we all had a nice visit where my brother in law could also meet Jameson and Violet.
I was so happy to have Hudson home!
It was another mostly sleepless night but it felt good to have our family all under one roof again.
Monday
Monday was a quiet day around home. We had an appointment for Jameson and Violet in the afternoon, which went well, followed by a slow evening in.
Tuesday
Tuesday was a quiet day at home, which was much needed. While my recovery is going well, I’m still pretty sore and tired much of the time. A friend of ours came by to meet the babies and dropped us off a delicious dinner. Both babies then spent the late afternoon and into the evening cluster feeding, so I was pretty confined to the couch!
Wednesday
Wednesday was a busy day where we had visitors most of the day. My sister-in-law came by in the morning, my sister and niece came by in the afternoon to drop me off the sweetest gifts, and another friend came by for a quick little visit and to drop us off some diapers. We ended up having a late dinner and then a lazy night in.
Thursday
Thursday morning was a lazy one as I was still really tired from the day before. I finally had a better night sleep (close to 4 whole hours!) so was feeling a bit more like myself. The sleep deprivation with a newborn is no joke and it’s that much more intense with twins. I’ve been getting about 3 hours of sleep a night and it’s without a doubt the hardest part of motherhood, in my opinion. I’m trying to remind myself that this is temporary and I will sleep through the night again someday.
The twins had their first appointment with our family doctor which went well, and we ended the week with another restful night in.
All in all things are going smoother than I had anticipated. Having three under three is a lot of hard work, but we have also been very lucky to have lots of support around us.
