I was not great at prioritizing my nutrition when I was postpartum with Hudson. I would occasionally skip meals when I was busy and I didn’t stay properly hydrated. I was able to breastfeed him for 13 months, but it wasn’t without its challenges. I feel like had I prioritized healthy foods that were also convenient, I would have had a much easier time.
As I approached my final days of my twin pregnancy, I knew prioritizing my nutrition was going to be non-negotiable if I wanted to try breastfeeding two babies at once. I didn’t want to put too much pressure on myself, but I did want to give it an honest try. So far I have been lucky to be able to feed both babies! I breastfeed Jameson and give Violet pumped breast milk as she has a tongue tie and a lip tie that are preventing her from properly latching. She sometimes gets one formula bottle per day, but most days it’s all breast milk and I feel like these convenience foods are a big help:
Rotisserie Chicken
I love buying one of these with our weekly groceries. I immediately take the meat off and keep it in a container in the fridge. I use the meat for salads, sandwiches, wraps, and soups throughout the week. Getting enough protein has been a priority of mine and this is a great option when I’m short on time!
Berries
I am always well stocked in berries (if you have a toddler, you know) but I rarely eat them. I started allowing myself to actually eat the berries (which feels like a crime for some reason). I forgot how delicious they are and they’re a great way to up my fibre for the day.
Hard Boiled Eggs
I could totally hard boil my own eggs, but right now I know I’m not going to make the time. I have been buying prepared hard boiled eggs to grab as a quick snack, addition to my breakfast or salads, and it has been one of the best decisions!
Yogurt Cups
I Like keeping yogurt cups on hand to add to my breakfasts and/or to have for a snack. I try to opt for Greek yogurt when I can for the added protein.
Pre-Washed Lettuce
Pre-washed lettuce makes adding greens to my meals so easy! I will often make a small garden salad to go with my lunches and/or dinners as an easy way to get some veggies into my diet and because I don’t need to wash the lettuce first, it makes everything so quick.
Granola Bars
I’ve been playing around with a homemade oat bar recipe (coming soon) and will sometimes buy granola bars as a treat. Oats are a wonderful thing to eat to boost breastmilk supply and granola bars make a grear snack to eat on the go, or when you’re confined to a chair nursing.
Canned Beans/Chickpeas
Having canned beans and chickpeas on hand is a must for me. I love adding black beans to salads for additional protein that is ready to eat immediately and have been making these delicious chickpea tacos that are ready in no time!
