Being home with three littles has me trying to spend less time on my phone. It can be hard as scrolling has become a bad habit of mine. But, I never want my kids to feel like they come second to my phone. They are the most important to me, and I want my actions to demonstrate that to them. While of course, it’s not possible to be disconnected all day every day, I have been trying to leave my phone in a resting place so that I can be more present with my family. Here are some things I have found to be better than being on your phone:
Trying a New Recipe
I love to bake and cook. Being in the kitchen is a form of self care for me as it allows me to truly slow down and be present in what I’m doing. Trying out a new recipe can be especially fun as it often challenges you a bit more too!
Snuggling a Baby
I’m lucky in that there is no shortage of baby snuggles around here these days. This is the last time in my life I’ll have a newborn (or two) so I’m trying to soak it in as much as possible — while also chasing around my toddler who is growing like a weed before my eyes.
Wandering Around a Farmers’ Market
I love going to the farmers’ market this time of year. It’s nice to get outside and support local vendors while stocking up on fresh produce for the week ahead.
Perfecting Your Homemade Iced Coffee Recipe
I am an iced coffee addict. I want at least one every single day and love getting coffee out. It adds up though, especially being on maternity leave with three kids. So, I have been working on making really good iced coffee from home, and I think I’ve nailed it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still not going to turn down an iced caramel macchiato, but I don’t feel the need to go to a drive-thru every day either.
Sharing a Meal with Loved Ones
Growing up, we had family dinners around the table every night and it was something I always looked forward to. As we got older, we would all linger around the table chatting; sometimes for hours! I want to build those same memories with my little family now too. Family dinners are a great way to reconnect with your loved ones and are a big priority for me now that I’m raising a family too.
Trying Out a New Hobby
Trying out new hobbies makes me feel like a kid again. There is something so satisfying about doing something just for the sake of enjoying it. Last year I started a small garden with my son and it was such an enjoyable experience, for example.
Going to Bed Early
We’ve all been guilty of staying up too late doomscrolling on our phone. While some days that can feel necessary, most of the time it really isn’t. Getting to bed earlier will make you feel better and allow you to enjoy the following day that much more.
Laughing with a Toddler
H is so funny and has the best laugh. I love playing with him and being silly. It makes me so happy and I know I’m going to look back on these memories fondly one day.
