This year I started a balcony garden and it has already proved to be SO much fun! I’m longing for some land where we can grow a really nice garden, however that is not in the cards right now. I started doing some research in early spring about growing a vertical garden and was happy to learn that it would be possible with our climate. Going out there is so relaxing and Hudson loves to help me, which is so sweet. Our balcony has become my favourite spot. I thought it would be fun to share a little bit about the supplies I used to create my balcony garden as well as let you know what I’m growing out there. I’m a total beginner, so I have a lot to learn. This is really more so to inspire anyone with a small outdoor space who wants to start a garden rather than being super educational, as I’m still figuring it all out!
How I Built My Balcony Garden
This vertical garden is a must-have! The planters are a good size and it was easy to build (thanks, Cole!). It feels secure, but I have also secured it to our balcony railing with zip-ties for added security as we are up quite high and it can get pretty windy at times.
Aside from that, I purchased some additional pots from the dollar store, soil from the garden centre, a trellis, and a small shovel. I didn’t spend a whole lot to make this a reality, which is always nice.
We also have an outdoor rug, fairy lights, a love seat with throw pillows, and a cast iron bistro set out there from before to make it cozy and functional. We love eating dinner out on the balcony especially and having the garden out there really makes it extra special!

What I’m Growing in My Balcony Garden
I’m growing a decent amount out there actually! Here is a breakdown of everything:
Flowers
In the top planter of my vertical garden, I’m growing marigolds and daisies for a fun pop of colour. In separate pots I’m also growing daisies, asters, and a type of edible flower. I only just planted seeds for the flowers in separate pots, but they are starting to sprout! I wasn’t planning to grow many flowers at all initially, but I’m happy I have as they really add a cheerful element to the balcony.
Herbs
My herbs have been doing really well! I’m currently growing mint, dill, chives, and basil. I also have lavender and lemongrass growing in separate pots as I’ve heard they help keep mosquitos away.
Vegetables
I’ve got a few types of lettuce that have been growing really well. We’ve actually been able to make a couple of salads already using lettuce from the garden already! I’m also growing beans, snow peas, green onions, and cherry tomatoes. The cherry tomato plants and the bean plants are starting to flower now, which is really exciting!
