Today’s post is going to be a quick one! These pickled onions are quick to make, taste delicious, and are an essential in my fridge. I love adding them to tacos, salads, nachos, etc. for extra flavour.
All you need is some sliced red onion, vinegar (apple cider or white will work), some water, a little sugar, and a little salt. Everything gets added to an air-tight container and in less than an hour, you’ve got delicious pickled onions to add to your favourite dishes!
Pickled Onions
Ingredients
- 1 red onion, finely sliced
- 1 cup vinegar (white or apple cider)
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp sugar
Instructions
- Place the red onion slices into a jar and set aside.
- In a glass or measuring cup, combine the vinegar, hot water, salt, and sugar. Stir until the salt and sugar are dissolved.
- Pour the vinegar mixture into the jar, ensuring all of the onions are submerged.
- Let sit for 40-45 minutes with the lid off to let cool. Once time is up, put a lid on the jar and store in the refrigerator.
- Pickles are ready to eat at this point, but I recommend refrigerating at least 2-3 hours before serving when possible.
I used to think pickled onions would be hard to make, but they couldn’t be easier. They literally take minutes to prepare and are ready in under an hour. I prefer to let them sit a little bit longer than that, but still. Not bad, if you ask me. I have used this recipe with both apple cider vinegar as well as white vinegar and they both work well. I have a slight preference to apple cider vinegar, but as I mentioned, both are good so just use what you have on hand.
I always have a jar in my fridge and have even made them as hostess gifts. They’re always a hit and I think you’ll love them too.
